Departmental News
Fall 2007
We have already had two guest lecturers on campus this fall: Dr. Darius Arya from Rome, Italy and Prof. Gaby Mazor from Israel.
Soon we will be inducting our first Eta Sigma Phi members as our department has been accepted into the national honor society for classics.
More news...
Welcome students and Prof. Joseph McAlhany! Professor McAlhany is a new member of the Classics department. He comes to us from University of New Mexico. At Columbia University he wrote his dissertation on the first-century BCE polymath, Varro.
During the summer, two members of the Classics faculty were busy excavating. Professor Schowalter excavated at Omrit with 3 Carthage students. For the excavations at Omrit, go to Omrit .
Professor Renaud went to Rome to excavate at the Villa delle Vignacce with an Italian-American team (Comune di Roma and the American Institute of Roman Culture). The luxury villa belonged to Quintus Servilius Pudens who built his sprawling residence along one of the major roads (the Via Latina) leading into the city and next to a series of aqueducts. Prof. Renaud will be recruiting students for the 2008 season. For more information about the excavation, see Professor Chris Reanud or go to Villa delle Vignacce.

Doing Research
Research is akin to archaeological excavating: you have to dig through a mass of material to find appropriate and germane material for your papers/senior thesis. Carthage has a wonderful Electronic Library. It also has a superb InterLibraryLoan service. Use these services.
Carthage's Online Journals As a dearth of good, reliable work or articles are to be found onthe web, you will discover that you need to do research the old fashioned way, albeit using new technology: online journals. Do you need help in writing your paper? Go to the Carthage Writing Center.
